Announcement for the new Fifth Star Trek Series.

Starship Enterprise
Star Trek Franchise to Get 'Radical'
July 13, 2000

By Josef Adalian and Michael Schneider

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - A new TV series in the "Star Trek" franchise is set for lift-off sometime next year, producers said Wednesday.

Writer/producer Brannon Braga said he and "Trek" veteran Rick Berman were still in "the early conceptual stages" of forming a concept.

"We want it to be 'Star Trek' at its core, but we also want it to ... change the concept to a radical degree," Braga said.

"It's not enough to plop another captain in a starship. Not to sound pretentious, but it's got to be something that takes 'Star Trek' into the 21st century."

The project is set up at Paramount Television. It is not yet clear whether it will end up in broadcast or syndication.

Braga is currently executive producer of UPN's "Star Trek: Voyager," which begins its final season this fall. He will work on the new show under a three-year deal worth an estimated high-seven figures.

He entered the "Trek" world in 1990 as a writer-producer on the syndicated "Star Trek: The Next Generation." He also co-wrote the 1994 feature "Star Trek: Generations" and its 1996 successor "Star Trek: First Contact."
